Delete your account
Delete your account is a Twitter internet meme that was popularized in 2016 by Democratic presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton. The phrase was uttered several times prior to Clinton's tweet. On November 3, 2014, Bill Kristol received hundreds of tweets telling him to "Delete Your Account". Later, on February 16, 2016, Edward Snowden used the term in response to Jeb Bush's tweet "America" with an image of his name engraved onto a handgun. Originally a response to Donald Trump's tweet on June 9, 2016, it has become Clinton's most retweeted tweet of all time. In fact, on the day of the tweet, the phrase was mentioned over 344 thousand times. Afterwards, Trump responded "How long did it take your staff of 823 people to think that up--and where are your 33,000 emails that you deleted?" The response referenced Clinton's ongoing email controversy. Reince Priebus also responded to Clinton's tweet with "If anyone knows how to use a delete key, it's you." The next day, Elizabeth Warren tweeted to Trump "No, seriously -- Delete your account." On June 12, 2016, John Oliver criticized Clinton because he felt that she was stooping to the same level as Trump. He believed that "the rest of the campaign is going be depressing if the two people running for president...repeatedly stoop to pandering and flame-throwing online." In response to the tweet, he created a .gif of Abraham Lincoln vomiting. The next day, Manny404 created an app that automatically sends "Delete your account" whenever Trump makes a tweet. On June 22, the phrase was used on buttons at a Clinton rally at Raleigh, North Carolina.
