Make America Great Again
"Make America Great Again" is a campaign slogan used by American politicians. It was first used by Ronald Reagan during his 1980 presidential campaign.
The term was created in 1979 during a time in which the United States was suffering from a worsening economy at home marked by high unemployment and inflation. The phrase "Let's Make America Great Again" appeared on buttons and posters during Reagan's 1980 campaign. Prior to the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump, the phrase was used as a reference to the Presidency of Ronald Reagan. Since Reagan left office, the slogan has been used by Donald Trump; Trump applied to trademark the slogan for his 2016 campaign and popularized the slogan by wearing hats bearing the phrase early in his campaign. Despite Trump trademarking the slogan, it was used in speeches by other 2016 candidates, such as Ted Cruz and Scott Walker.
In popular culture: Senator Armstrong, a character from the 2013 video game Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, used the slogan in an in-game cut-scene. The slogan was spoofed by the animated comedy series South Park, in the episode "Where My Country Gone?" supporters of Mr. Garrison, who ran a campaign similar to Trump's, are seen holding signs bearing the slogan. The title of Fall Out Boy's remix album Make America Psycho Again references the slogan. Comedian David Cross took part in a stand-up tour titled "Making America Great Again". WWE star Darren Young and former star Bob Backlund began appearing on WWE TV in May 2016 with Backlund acting as Young's life coach, promising to "Make Darren Young Great Again". Ted Cruz sold hats featuring "Make Trump Debate Again" in response to Trump boycotting the Iowa January 28, 2016 debate. Comedian John Oliver spoofed the slogan in a segment of his show, urging viewers to "Make Donald Drumpf Again" in reference to the original name of Trump's ancestors.
